Supplement interactions: check your stack

Select your supplements to spot combinations to watch: reduced absorption, opposing effects and overlaps. Each referenced alert links to its supporting studies.

Short answer

Some supplements get in each other's way. Calcium reduces iron absorption, high-dose zinc can cause copper deficiency, and coffee or tea with meals inhibits iron absorption. This tool checks common combinations, but not interactions with medicines: ask your pharmacist about those.

Recommendation

Medications: not covered

This tool only checks combinations of supplements in its database. If you take medication, ask your pharmacist or consult the Public medicines database.

What the tool measures

More supplements do not make a better stack

Interpreting the result

Interpret without overpromising

The tool does not give a score. It displays one of the following four statuses:

  • Documented interaction: at least one pair in your selection works against your goal, for example caffeine + melatonin.
  • Conflicting effects or redundancy: a pair to watch, too many stimulants in the evening, too many calming products or more than 5 products.
  • Insufficient data: none of the selected combinations are covered by the database. The tool cannot draw a conclusion.
  • No alerts within the covered scope: nothing detected among the documented combinations. Uncovered combinations remain unknown.

Coverage indicates how many combinations in your stack the database could assess, for example 3 out of 6. The absence of an alert does not prove the absence of risk.

Calculation and assumptions

Methodology

Scope of validity

Limitations to know

Frequently asked questions

Before using the result

What's the maximum number of supplements per day?

There is no official number. The more you take, the more likely overlaps and interactions become, and the harder it is to know what is working. Keep those that meet a specific need.

Can you take iron and calcium together?

It's better to space them out: calcium reduces non-haem iron absorption when taken at the same meal. Take them at different times of day.

Does zinc lower copper levels?

Yes, at high doses over several months, zinc can cause copper deficiency, with anaemia or neurological problems. Avoid combining several products that contain it.

How can I tell whether two supplements interact?
