Our verdict on L72 for sleep is cautious: the leaflets do not support presenting it as a treatment with proven effectiveness against insomnia. Drops and tablets differ mainly in their excipients and directions for use. Despite its similar name, L72NUIT belongs to another category: it is a food supplement containing melatonin.
If you are comparing these packs before buying, the first thing to check is therefore the full product name. An answer about L72NUIT does not apply to L72 drops, and a review of the tablets tells you nothing about the alcohol in the solution.
This article is a document-based review, based on the leaflets and publications consulted on 30 September 2026. We have not personally tested these products and do not give them an effectiveness rating. L72 and L72NUIT: different classifications and ingredients
The public medicines database lists L72 oral drops, solution and L72 orodispersible tablets as homeopathic medicines. Their indications are based on traditional use for minor sleep problems associated with nervousness and anxiety states. The summaries of product characteristics specify that there are no scientific data providing another basis for these indications. Sources: official drops entry and official tablets entry.
L72NUIT is a food supplement in capsules for adults only, combining melatonin, plant extracts and magnesium. It is neither the L72 tablet nor a more concentrated homeopathic version. Its composition is published on the manufacturer’s product page.
| Criterion | L72 drops | L72 tablets | L72NUIT |
|---|---|---|---|
| Classification | Homeopathic medicine | Homeopathic medicine | Food supplement |
| Verified presentation | 30 mL bottle | Orodispersible tablets, packs of 40 or 100 | Pack of 30 capsules |
| Melatonin | None | None | 1.9 mg per capsule |
| Main ingredients | Ten homeopathic source ingredients | The same ten source ingredients | Valerian, chamomile, California poppy, magnesium, melatonin |
| Practical point to watch | 43% ethanol by volume | Lactose and sucrose | Melatonin-related precautions and interactions, possible plant allergies |
| What the classification tells you | A regulated package leaflet exists | A regulated package leaflet exists | The ingredients and precautions must be read |
The medicine presentations are also listed by Vidal. Medicine status alone is not proof of a clinical benefit for this indication. Conversely, supplement status does not mean a product has no effects or risks.
L72 drops and tablets: what do the ingredient lists tell us?
Ten shared source ingredients, no melatonin
Both formulations combine the following source ingredients, at the dilutions given in the leaflets:
| Source ingredient | Declared dilution or preparation |
|---|---|
| Asa foetida | 6 DH |
| Avena sativa | Mother tincture, labelled TM |
| Chamomilla vulgaris | 3 DH |
| Cicuta virosa | 6 DH |
| Hyoscyamus niger | 1 DH |
| Ignatia amara | 3 DH |
| Nux vomica | 3 DH |
| Staphysagria | 4 DH |
| Sumbulus moschatus | 6 DH |
| Valeriana officinalis | 2 DH |
This list appears in the drops leaflet published by Lehning and on the tablets product page. The DH units and the TM designation describe homeopathic preparations. They do not allow these ingredients to be compared directly with the milligrams of plant extracts in L72NUIT.
The presence of valerian or chamomile in two products therefore does not make them interchangeable. A plant’s name alone does not identify its preparation or predict the effect of the blend being sold.
The drops: the alcohol deserves a proper check
The solution contains 43% ethanol by volume. The leaflet states that it provides 254 mg of ethanol per 30 drops. This percentage refers to the liquid in the bottle, not blood alcohol concentration.
The leaflet highlights precautions for people with alcoholism, hepatic impairment or epilepsy. It advises against using this form during pregnancy and breastfeeding. If you need to avoid alcohol, seek advice before buying. Adding water does not remove the ethanol in the drops. Reference: manufacturer’s leaflet.
The tablets: check the sugars and the leaflet for this specific form
Each tablet contains, among other ingredients, 118.61 mg of lactose and 8.75 mg of sucrose. The leaflet mentions precautions for certain rare hereditary disorders of sugar metabolism. This does not mean that every digestive intolerance to lactose automatically constitutes the same contraindication.
The official tablet leaflet also advises avoiding this form during pregnancy and breastfeeding as a precaution. Older, reassuring information on another page does not override this advice. Reference: tablet summary of product characteristics and leaflet.
The orodispersible tablet disintegrates in the mouth. This practical advantage does not demonstrate a faster effect on sleep. Our comparison provides no evidence for ranking drops ahead of tablets, or vice versa, in terms of effectiveness.
Duration of use: a guideline not to sidestep
For adults, the manufacturer’s documents specify an initial period of use limited to two weeks. Do not convert the number of drops into a number of tablets, or extend treatment on your own because there are doses left in the pack. The directions are specific to each form: L72 drops and L72 tablets.
If the difficulties persist, the useful question becomes what is causing the poor sleep and how to address it. Buying a bigger pack does not resolve that uncertainty.
What evidence is there for homeopathy for sleep?
A recent review does not demonstrate a convincing benefit
A systematic review published online in August 2026 included nine studies in adults, including six randomised trials. The meta-analysis found no statistically significant difference between homeopathic interventions and their comparators. Results were highly heterogeneous, risks of bias were often high, and overall certainty was low.
The authors consider the evidence insufficient to support the effectiveness of homeopathy for insomnia. We consulted the indexed abstract, not the full text of this publication: Paracha and colleagues, Complementary Therapies in Medicine, 2026.
This review is not a trial specifically of L72. Nor does it prove that no user will feel an improvement. It indicates that the available evidence does not allow a reliable benefit to be attributed to the homeopathic treatment studied.
A positive testimonial is not enough to measure the product’s effect
An earlier review of four randomised trials had already noted small sample sizes and poor methodological quality. Several trials observed improvement in both groups, with no significant difference between treatment and placebo. Source, abstract consulted: Cooper and Relton, 2010.
Someone can therefore sincerely report a better night’s sleep without their testimonial establishing the specific effectiveness of L72. When deciding what to buy, customer reviews are no substitute for a controlled comparison.
The HAS, in its 2019 assessment, also concluded that the effectiveness of the homeopathic medicines assessed was insufficiently demonstrated to justify reimbursement. This was a general assessment, not a clinical trial of these two L72 presentations.
L72NUIT: melatonin changes the comparison
For one capsule, Lehning declares 1.9 mg of melatonin, 56.25 mg of magnesium, along with valerian, chamomile and California poppy extracts. The amounts of these extracts are, respectively, 150 mg, 100 mg and 80 mg. The plant equivalents shown elsewhere on the label are not additional quantities to add together. Source: L72NUIT composition.
The manufacturer describes the melatonin as prolonged-release. This stated feature does not guarantee a full night’s sleep. References on individual ingredients are not enough to establish the effectiveness of the finished blend in someone with insomnia.
The 2023 European guidelines allow prolonged-release melatonin to be considered in certain situations in people aged at least 55. They do not automatically endorse every supplement bearing this description. Source, abstract consulted: European Insomnia Guideline, 2023.
To understand this distinction, see our article on prolonged-release melatonin and its limitations · FR. L72NUIT must be assessed as a separate product, with its own precautions. To compare it with a melatonin gummy, also read our review of ZzzQuil Sommeil and its side effects.
Switching sleep products does not remove the need to check for interactions. Our feature Griffonia and 5-HTP: dangers and contraindications separately addresses serotonin precursors, particularly when taken with an antidepressant.
Precautions, side effects and warning signs
For L72: no published frequency does not mean zero risk
The leaflets for the two medicines do not provide numerical frequencies for specific side effects. They ask users to report any effects experienced to a doctor or pharmacist. Contraindications include hypersensitivity to any ingredient. Sources: drops leaflet and tablets leaflet.
If a symptom appears after taking the product, keep the pack and specify the form used, the amount, when you took it and any other products consumed. Do not automatically describe worsening symptoms as “adjusting” to the treatment.
For L72NUIT: follow melatonin precautions
The Anses opinion on melatonin advises against supplements containing it during pregnancy and breastfeeding, in children and adolescents, and in people with inflammatory or autoimmune disease. Medical advice is needed in cases of epilepsy, asthma or certain mood, behavioural or personality disorders.
The reports examined include drowsiness, headaches, dizziness, digestive problems and nightmares. They concern various supplements and do not allow a frequency specific to L72NUIT to be calculated.
The points to check before considering this supplement are as follows:
- If you take medication, you need to discuss interactions with a doctor.
- Activities requiring sustained alertness are incompatible with drowsiness caused by the product.
- Combining several supplements, particularly those containing melatonin, may increase risks.
- Anses recommends occasional use and giving preference to simple formulations.
The L72NUIT product page adds a warning about plant allergies, particularly to the Asteraceae family, which includes chamomile. Read its precautions for use before comparing price alone.
When should you seek medical advice rather than switch packs?
If the difficulties recur, last several weeks or affect your day, make an appointment. The doctor will look for causes including medication, a mood disorder, sleep apnoea or restless legs syndrome. Reference: Ameli, insomnia consultation and assessment, January 2026.
Drowsiness that compromises driving requires immediate action: do not get behind the wheel. Breathing pauses reported by those around you, waking up choking at night or a marked decline in your ability to function call for an assessment rather than a succession of products.
For chronic insomnia, the cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia, or CBT-I, is recommended as first-line treatment by European guidelines. Our article on insomnia and the effort to sleep · FR explains this approach without reducing it to a bedtime trick.
Our verdict on buying L72 for sleep
We do not recommend buying L72 on the basis of proven effectiveness against insomnia. The verifiable differences between drops and tablets concern their form, excipients and package leaflets. They do not amount to a clinical ranking.
If you are still considering buying it after speaking with a pharmacist, identify the exact version and check that it is suitable for your situation. If you are looking for melatonin, L72 drops and tablets do not contain any. L72NUIT does, but the similar name does not automatically make this supplement suitable.
Before paying, four questions can help clarify your choice:
- Does the box say L72 or L72NUIT, and what exactly is its form?
- Does the package leaflet include any precautions relevant to you, particularly concerning alcohol, sugars, pregnancy or current treatment?
- Is the effectiveness claim based on the finished product, an ingredient or testimonials alone?
- Do your sleep problems already call for a consultation rather than another purchase?
A pharmacist can help you understand the package leaflet. For persistent sleep difficulties, a sleep assessment is worth more than a promise on a box.
Sources and verification method
The official package leaflets were accessed on 30 September 2026. Their text is dated 30 November 2018 for the drops and 1 August 2022 for the tablets. The portal’s update date must not be confused with the date of the package leaflet. The Vidal entry shows an update from February 2021: the instructions in the official package leaflets take precedence for this analysis.
Lehning’s pages are used to verify the products and their compositions, not as an independent assessment of their effectiveness. The scientific publications cited were consulted as indexed abstracts. This review will need to be revised if the package leaflets, the L72NUIT formulation or the clinical evidence change.
