Peptides in bodybuilding: promised effects and real risks

Peptides in bodybuilding: promised effects and real risks
SupplementsImage de l’article

Bodybuilding peptides: CJC-1295, ipamorelin, BPC-157 and TB-500 have not established a robust benefit for muscle or strength gains in healthy adults. Even for GH studied directly, a review found around 2.1 kg of additional lean mass, without convincing improvements in strength: lean mass does not mean only contractile muscle.

This page focuses on muscle gain, strength and recovery from sport. Experimental peptide dosing, obesity medicines and the chemistry behind a certificate are covered in separate guides. No injection cycle, stack or purchasing route can be inferred from the data below.

Which peptides are used or promoted in bodybuilding?

“Peptide” describes a chain of amino acids, not effectiveness. Sellers group molecules with very different targets under this term. A signalling hormone is not interchangeable with collagen peptides consumed as hydrolysed proteins.

To understand what is actually being promised, distinguish between the following families:

  • CJC-1295 and GHRH analogues: stimulation of the growth hormone axis.
  • Ipamorelin and GHRPs: stimulation of GH secretion through other receptors.
  • IGF-1 and analogues: downstream action on growth signals.
  • BPC-157 and TB-500: promises of tendon, ligament or muscle repair.

Ibutamoren MK-677 is often displayed alongside them, even though it is not a peptide. The MK-677 guide: evidence and dangers explains this difference. SARMs belong to yet another family. Sharing a shop window is not a pharmacological classification.

What effects on muscle and strength have actually been demonstrated?

The table preserves the crucial distinction between hormones, body composition and sporting outcomes. Short-term trials do not validate the vials or combinations being marketed:

Product or familyWhat is documented in humansWhat is missing for bodybuilding
CJC-1295 with DACSustained increases in GH and IGF-1 in two short trialsDemonstrated hypertrophy and strength, long-term safety
IpamorelinGH response in an acute pharmacological studyMuscle benefit in a relevant trial in healthy adults
BPC-157Some limited human data, mostly preclinical musculoskeletal literatureRobust trials on repair, return to sport and safety
TB-500Extrapolations from thymosin beta-4 and indirect dataValidation of the product sold and its sporting benefits
IGF-1 LR3, PEG-MGFNo relevant clinical demonstration for the versions promoted in bodybuilding in the 2026 reviewMuscle gain and safety of the exact product
GH, somatropinHuman trials: increased lean mass, extracellular water and adverse effectsReliable strength gains and a favourable benefit–risk balance for this use

CJC-1295 and ipamorelin: a rising hormone level is not a growing biceps

In two trials lasting 28 and 49 days, CJC-1295 increased mean GH levels 2- to 10-fold and IGF-1 levels 1.5- to 3-fold after one administration. The main endpoints were hormonal and pharmacokinetic. Increased muscle size and strength were not the demonstrated benefits. These studies involved a product under investigation, not an interchangeable vial bought online.

The pharmacological study on ipamorelin also measures the GH response after infusion in male volunteers. A commercially sold injection in another form cannot automatically inherit its findings.

The 2026 endocrinology review confirms the differences in evidence between molecules and the uncertainty surrounding body recomposition benefits. The ipamorelin and CJC-1295 guide covers DAC, pharmacokinetics and studies in detail: here, the question remains what you can expect for your muscles. The answer is far less precise than the timeline your coach is selling.

GH: why two kilos of lean mass do not prove two kilos of muscle

The 2008 review in young, physically fit adults found an average increase in lean mass of 2.1 kg, with a confidence interval of 1.3 to 2.9 kg. Strength and exercise capacity did not appear to improve, while oedema and fatigue were more common. The studies were small and short.

An eight-week trial in 96 recreational athletes, funded by WADA, subsequently found a small improvement in sprint capacity, but no significant change in the other performance measures studied. The increase in lean mass with GH involved an increase in extracellular water. The sprint effect was no longer maintained six weeks after stopping. So saying “no possible effect on any performance” would go too far. Saying “proven hypertrophy” would too.

These findings concern GH administered in a trial. They demonstrate neither the effectiveness of a secretagogue nor that of a stack.

Do BPC-157 and TB-500 speed up tendon recovery?

A systematic review published in 2025, covering the literature up to June 2024, included 36 studies, of which 35 were preclinical and one clinical. The latter was retrospective, concerned chronic knee pain, and did not demonstrate tendon repair or return to sport. These numbers describe the historical scope of that review, not an inventory of all future research.

The 2026 sports medicine review still describes the contrast between promising animal findings and the scarcity of rigorous human safety data. Data on pharmaceutical thymosin beta-4 do not automatically validate a product labelled TB-500.

The BPC-157 and TB-500 guide, known as the Wolverine stack · FR addresses this specific promise. Less pain does not measure a tendon’s mechanical strength or the safety of returning to heavy loading. That is the practical mistake to avoid.

Peptides or steroids: are effectiveness and risks comparable?

An anabolic steroid acts partly through the androgen receptor. A ten-week randomised trial in 43 men measured gains in muscle size and strength with supraphysiological testosterone exposure. This direct result differs from a simple rise in IGF-1.

This effectiveness does not make steroids safe. The Endocrine Society scientific statement describes the risks of performance-enhancing drugs and the difficulties of assessment when several substances are combined. No comparative trial supports ranking popular peptides as “just as effective but safer”.

For hypertrophy, useful criteria remain strength progression, the ability to sustain repeated training sessions and body measurements interpreted over time. A bioimpedance scale or a before-and-after photo cannot separate water, glycogen and muscle tissue. Before looking for a hormonal product, first check whether your daily protein intake matches your training context.

Safety: side effects and what to do after use

Risks depend on the actual molecule, exposure, combinations and product. You cannot apply the frequency of oedema with GH to every peptide, or turn a mechanism into a certainty of cancer.

Hormonal, metabolic and proliferation risks

GH trials document oedema and other symptoms. Depending on the agent, the 2026 endocrinology review describes blood glucose disturbances, hormonal changes, musculoskeletal symptoms and local reactions. Long-term data are lacking for many prolonged and combined uses.

Growth or angiogenesis signals raise biological concerns, particularly in the presence of a tumour. They do not demonstrate that every peptide causes cancer in humans. They do, however, rule out claiming safety simply because no immediate adverse event occurs.

Injectables, contamination and certificates

The ANSM reports adverse event notifications, including hospitalisations, following fraudulent products, notably some presented as retatrutide. It describes digestive problems, feeling unwell, dehydration, liver injury, infections and severe allergic reactions. This safety signal provides neither incidence rates nor attribution of each event to each bodybuilding peptide.

An HPLC purity certificate alone does not cover the identity, quantity per vial, sterility, endotoxins and stability of the delivered product. The online peptides and the limits of certificates of analysis · FR guide details these checks: this page is not a guide to choosing a seller.

If you have already used a product obtained outside official channels

The useful response is not to adjust the cycle:

  1. Stop using the product obtained outside official channels and do not try another vial.
  2. Do not compensate with another peptide, insulin or a diuretic.
  3. Keep the packaging, batch details, certificate and list of other products used, with dates.
  4. Seek medical advice promptly if you experience an adverse effect and report it through the official reporting portal.

Persistent vomiting, severe abdominal pain, jaundice, feeling unwell, fever or spreading redness at the injection site require prompt medical advice. In France, breathing difficulties, swelling of the face or throat, loss of consciousness or severe distress mean you must call 15 or 112. Do not delay getting help to have the vial analysed.

Peptides in France and WADA: what is prohibited?

There are peptide medicines authorised for specific indications. That does not, by analogy, legalise grey-market vials or their use for bodybuilding. The ANSM alert of 2 July, updated on 31 August 2026, advises against buying or using the products obtained outside official channels that it covers, including BPC-157 and TB-500. The August update mentions a new measure targeting a product presented as retatrutide, not a study of muscle-building effectiveness.

The label “research use only” does not authorise human administration. A delivery country, a ready-to-inject pen or a coach’s opinion changes nothing.

Sporting rules are separate from medicines law. In the 2026 WADA List currently in force, the relevant categories are as follows:

Substance2026 WADA sectionProhibition period
BPC-157S0, non-approved substancesIn and out of competition
CJC-1295S2.2.4, GH-releasing factorsIn and out of competition
Ipamorelin, GHRP-2 and GHRP-6S2.2.4In and out of competition
GH and analoguesS2.2.3In and out of competition
IGF-1, analogues and MGFsS2.3In and out of competition
Thymosin beta-4 and derivatives, including TB-500S2.3In and out of competition

A sporting prohibition does not prove muscle gain. It is enough to disprove the sales pitch “legal because it isn’t a steroid”. No stopping interval that would allow you to evade a test can be inferred from this table.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  • Which peptide builds muscle?

The evidence does not support recommending a grey-market peptide for hypertrophy in healthy adults. CJC-1295 and ipamorelin mainly have data on GH and IGF-1, not muscle or strength. BPC-157 and TB-500 target repair claims that remain insufficiently established in humans.

  • Are peptides and steroids comparable?

They are different families. Testosterone trials directly measure muscle size and strength. For many peptides promoted for bodybuilding, findings remain hormonal or preclinical. No rigorous comparative trial allows them to be ranked on the same scale of effectiveness and safety.

  • Are collagen peptides the same products?

No. A hydrolysed protein powder consumed as food or a supplement is not a vial of CJC-1295 or BPC-157 intended to alter hormonal pathways or claim tissue repair. The word peptide alone cannot predict effects, status or risk.

  • Are bodybuilding peptides authorised in France?

Some peptide medicines are authorised for specific indications. That does not authorise unevaluated vials sold for bodybuilding. The ANSM advises against using the peptides obtained outside official channels covered by its alert. The label research use only does not authorise any human administration.

  • Are BPC-157, TB-500, CJC-1295 and ipamorelin prohibited in sport?

Yes, under the 2026 WADA List: BPC-157 falls under S0, TB-500 under S2.3, and both CJC-1295 and ipamorelin under S2.2.4. These prohibitions apply at all times, in and out of competition. They do not rank the evidence of effectiveness.

  • Does a certificate of analysis make an injectable peptide safe?

No. The purity of a sample is not enough to confirm dose, sterility, endotoxins, stability and whether it matches the batch delivered. A certificate replaces neither an authorised medicine nor clinical monitoring.

  • What should you do after adverse effects?

Stop using the product obtained outside official channels and seek medical advice promptly, taking the packaging, batch details and list of other substances used. In France, breathing difficulties, swelling of the face or throat, loss of consciousness or severe distress mean you must call 15 or 112. Do not try to correct the problem with another peptide.
