Adamax: cognitive evidence, risks and French regulatory status

Adamax: cognitive evidence, risks and French regulatory status
SupplementsImage de l’article

Adamax is presented as a Semax derivative, but its cognitive promises are not supported by direct human trials identified in this audit. A chemical certificate can provide information about a sample. It does not demonstrate that the product improves your memory, reaches your brain or has an acceptable safety profile.

During the document review on 18 October 2026, I found neither a direct clinical publication in the targeted search nor a trial registered under this name in ClinicalTrials.gov. This supports a verdict of Unproven, without claiming to demonstrate absolute ineffectiveness.

The useful question, then, is: which evidence addresses which promise? The laboratory analyzing a vial and the team testing a human benefit are not doing the same job. The first report cannot sign off on behalf of the second.

Identifying Adamax: the name is not enough

The word Adamax also refers to a computational optimizer used in machine learning. A raw literature search therefore turns up papers on neural networks and medical image classification. They do not test any peptide, even if their titles mention the brain or cancer.

In the nootropics market, Adamax is described as a modified analogue of Semax. The Biolab product page describes an N-acetylated backbone related to Semax and a C-terminal extension bearing an adamantyl group associated with P21. I am reporting this claimed identity, without certifying it or equating Adamax with P21 or simple N-acetyl-Semax. This description is not an independent characterization of the product being sold. Without documented analytical identification, the name alone does not guarantee that two preparations contain exactly the same substance.

There is institutional context: a June 2025 Medsafe document, intended for New Zealand’s classification committee, lists Adamax and Semax among ACTH analogues marketed for cognition. It highlights the limited clinical research on these analogues and the unknowns surrounding their long-term effects. This is a foreign classification proposal, not validation of efficacy or a French regulatory status.

To understand the parent compound, our comparison of the evidence for Semax and Selank provides context. It is not a clinical dossier for Adamax.

Auditing the promises: where are the direct sources?

The analysis covers the pages actually consulted, with no purchase, personal testing or vial analysis. Biolab’s category page mainly highlights analytical checks. Its product page adds pharmacological claims. These pages are commercial material under audit, never medical evidence.

The table presents some claims from this product page and the evidence needed to establish them:

Claim examinedSource and substance concernedSpecies or model actually documentedConclusion for Adamax
Greater stability and resistance to degradationBiolab product page, claimed AdamaxNo comparative model specified in an identifiable direct publicationPromise not verified here
Two to three times greater activitySame product page, citing Semax analoguesSpecies, outcome measure and protocol not documented by a dedicated reference found in the searchThis multiplier cannot be translated into cognitive gains

Claimed purity of 97%Biolab product page, commercial sampleReported chemical analysis, not a study on an organismMethod, batch and report authenticity require examination

The Biolab product page was consulted on 18 October 2026 as a source of promises, not as a purchase recommendation. Its analytical results have not been authenticated with the laboratory. It also states that the product is not suitable for human consumption. The generic “99%” figure in some questions about peptides must therefore not be attributed to it.

Even an authentic report would leave the clinical question open. A comparison of activity at a target does not automatically measure an improvement in attention, let alone a benefit–risk balance in healthy adults.

How the search was conducted

In Europe PMC, searching for the name in titles and abstracts returns publications dominated by its computing namesake. Cross-searching the name Adamax with peptide, Semax or adamantane returns no results. Broadening the search to adamantane or adamantyl combined with Semax returns results, but no clinical trial specifically on Adamax was identified after reviewing the records. The presence of these words in a review or a collection of conference abstracts does not constitute a trial of the molecule. The ClinicalTrials.gov search finds no trial under Adamax.

This method does not justify declaring that “no one has ever studied anything.” Data may be unpublished, unindexed or registered under another identifier. The precise conclusion is more limited: no verifiable direct clinical evidence was identified within this date-specific search scope. Any new publication should be assessed on its content, not accepted because it contains the right word.

Semax findings do not automatically carry over

Semax has human data. That is the strongest argument to examine before drawing a conclusion, but the results must stay attached to the molecule’s name.

In a 2018 study of the brain’s default mode network, 24 healthy volunteers were studied: 14 received Semax and 10 a placebo. Functional imaging was performed before administration, then 5 and 20 minutes afterwards. The authors report a difference in the extent of a subsection of the network.

The finding concerns acute imaging changes under Semax. It does not establish a lasting memory gain, better work performance or an effect of Adamax. The abstract reviewed does not provide a superiority trial comparing the two molecules.

Another 2018 publication describes 110 patients undergoing rehabilitation after an ischaemic stroke. It reports favourable results for plasma BDNF and certain functional outcomes with Semax. The abstract does not clearly describe randomisation or blinding. Neither this population nor this setting corresponds to a healthy adult seeking better concentration or to treatment with Adamax.

BDNF is a factor involved in neuronal plasticity. A change in blood levels is not enough to establish cognitive improvement or determine what is happening in a particular brain region. Moving from BDNF measured after a stroke to a spray marketed as superior requires several additional pieces of evidence.

Finally, the FDA briefing document prepared for the July 2026 committee meeting highlights gaps in Semax characterisation and safety, as well as the absence of human pharmacokinetic studies identified by its reviewers. This preparatory document concerns US compounded preparations and Semax, not a decision on Adamax in France. Above all, it shows that the parent compound’s evidence base does not establish the safety of its derivatives.

Purity, sterility, exposure and efficacy: four separate questions

A chemical modification can alter stability, but also interaction with a target, distribution or degradation products. “More stable” does not automatically mean “more useful” or “safer.”

The EMA guideline on synthetic peptides distinguishes, among other things, identity, assay, impurities and microbiological quality. It recommends complementary methods to confirm identity. This pharmaceutical framework illustrates the breadth of checks needed, without certifying the commercial preparations examined here.

Type of evidenceQuestion it answersWhat it does not demonstrate on its own
Chemical identityWhat substance does the sample contain? Its quantity, effect or safety in humans
Assay and purityWhat quantity is measured, and which impurities does the method detect? The absence of all contaminants or a clinical benefit
Microbiological qualityWhat microbial checks have been performed?Efficacy or brain exposure
PharmacokineticsWhat exposure is achieved, where and for how long?An acceptable clinical improvement
Controlled clinical trialWhat benefits and adverse effects occur in the population studied?Universal safety or applicability to every formulation

A percentage must always be read alongside its method. A result expressed as a proportion of chromatographic signal is not necessarily equivalent to a mass fraction of the total contents. Some substances may be poorly detected or insufficiently separated. Water, counterions and residues also require appropriate interpretation.

Sterility is another property altogether. Requirements depend on the formulation and route: not every nasal spray is, by definition, a sterile product. Conversely, chemical testing does not demonstrate adequate microbiological quality. An injectable preparation notably raises requirements for sterility and endotoxin control.

Our guide to online peptides, contamination and sterility · FR explores these distinctions. None of these checks turns an experimental substance into a proven treatment.

Specific, extrapolated and unknown risks

Without identified direct human follow-up, it is not possible to calculate the frequency of Adamax adverse effects. Interactions, tolerability with repeated use and long-term consequences are not established in this review. The absence of a published signal is not a measure of safety: users first need to have been monitored systematically.

What relates to the Semax family or the product being sold

The questions raised about Semax provide grounds for vigilance, not a catalogue of proven Adamax adverse effects. Conversely, reported tolerability of Semax is not enough to provide reassurance about a derivative whose exposure and metabolites remain to be characterised.

The risk of a misidentified product, impurities or inadequate microbiological quality concerns the batch. It is distinct from the toxicity of the correctly characterised molecule. No Adamax-specific contamination rate was established in this audit.

France: authorization, sales and anti-doping are three separate questions

No Adamax or Semax entry was found in the French medicinal product and composition files, listed as current to 29 September 2026, or in the EMA medicines export examined on 18 October 2026. Searches also covered the terms adamantyl Semax and adamantane Semax. The composition and EMA files do contain reference substances, checked to confirm that the data were being read correctly.

Sources: French public medicines database and EMA medicines table. The EMA catalogue alone does not cover all national authorizations.

This name-based check does not cover every development code or special access scheme. No French or centralized EU marketing authorization corresponding to these names was identified. This is neither an exhaustive legal assessment of possession or importation nor proof of food status.

Sales: an accessible online shop is not enough

The DGCCRF notes that online medicine sales are regulated. A chemical certificate, delivery offered to France or a “research only” label does not constitute authorization for human use.

I do not infer a complete legal classification for every vial from these pages. The useful finding is simpler: being able to order something demonstrates neither authorization for treatment, nor benefit, nor safety. A name appearing in a foreign document is no substitute for a French decision applicable to the product.

As of 18 October 2026, the 2026 WADA Prohibited List is the list applicable to this check. Its S0 class prohibits at all times pharmacological substances not covered by the other sections and lacking approval for human therapeutic use from a governmental health authority. The AFLD documents the implementation of this list in France.

This criterion goes beyond French authorizations. The absence of marketing authorization in France is therefore not enough on its own to settle a worldwide classification, and the absence of the word Adamax from the examples does not prove that it is permitted. I did not identify any French decision specifically naming Adamax in the sources consulted. An athlete subject to anti-doping rules must have the exact substance checked by the relevant body, rather than treating an empty name search as a green light.

How to assess a promise without experimenting on yourself

Before giving a new promise any credit, check whether it answers these questions:

  • Is the substance studied clearly defined and identical to the one being discussed?
  • Is the analytical report complete, verifiable and linked to the correct batch?
  • Have human exposure and metabolites been measured?
  • Does a controlled trial measure a meaningful outcome rather than just a single biomarker?
  • Are adverse effects, interactions and dropouts recorded?
  • Does the claimed regulatory status match the country, formulation and use concerned?

A good answer to the first question does not let you skip the others. This checklist is for assessing evidence, not planning self-experimentation.

If your concentration remains impaired, reviewing your symptoms, sleep and treatments with a healthcare professional is more useful than switching peptides. Pregnancy, breastfeeding, being underage, neurological or psychiatric illness and medication use make medical advice even more important, without such a consultation making Adamax scientifically validated.

After exposure, report any unusual symptoms to a doctor or poison control centre, specifying the product and any other substances taken. Difficulty breathing, facial swelling, seizures or acute confusion warrant a call to 15 or 112. These are general emergency signs, not a list of proven effects of Adamax.

The Verdict

Main sources

The abstracts of the two Semax studies were consulted, with no claim of access to their full texts. The commercial page was examined for auditing purposes, with no affiliation or independent authentication of the batch:

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  • Is Adamax another name for Semax?

No. Adamax is presented as a chemically modified analogue of Semax. The claimed modifications do not allow either the benefits or the safety of Semax to be transferred to it. The trade name alone is not enough to precisely characterize the product being sold.

  • Does 99% purity demonstrate that Adamax is safe?

No. You need to know the method, the sample and what the percentage measures. Chromatographic purity demonstrates neither microbiological quality, brain exposure, clinical efficacy nor long-term safety. It is not authorization for human use.

  • Do Semax studies apply to Adamax?

No. A chemical modification can change activity, distribution, metabolites and risks. Small human studies on Semax provide context, without validating Adamax’s benefits, duration of action or safety.

  • Are there any direct human trials on Adamax?

As of 18 October 2026, the targeted search in Europe PMC and ClinicalTrials.gov identified neither a direct clinical publication nor a registered trial under the name Adamax. This name-based search does not guarantee that no research exists under another identifier or remains unpublished.
